Thanks to everybody for tuning in this summer.  Now that it’s over, if you have a hole in your heart because you want to hear more podcasts, let me know, okay?  Perhaps I’ll resurrect the ol’ podcast down the road.

And if you’re one of those folks who always meant to listen to the podcast stuff but never got around to it because you’re at work and listening to MP3 files at work would be conspicuous, but you fear you’ve blown your chances at grooving on the podcasty vibe, don’t worry.  The files will stay up on this here website for a good while.  So you can continue ignoring them to your heart’s content.

In class one day, I show my students a video.  I ask them, has anyone seen this video before?  And one student, this 5^th year senior named Jon Testa, says, “Yes.”  And it’s kind of a rare video, not rare exactly, but definitely avant-garde, so I say, “Oh?  When did you see it?”  And I can tell he’s thinking hard and he answers, “Five years ago.”  So, in other words:  when he was a freshman.

Now this kid, Jon Testa, is a scruffy fellow.  He’s not the stupidest kid in my class – that would be Bethany Pinkus – but he’s not exactly imbued with a sterling work ethic either.

The first time my heart stopped, I was twelve years old at my cousin’s wedding. The reception was held in this postal union hall, only my aunts had done everything over in lavender and yellow crepe paper. They had a D.J. of course – there’s no such thing as a wedding band in Iowa. The D.J. was my cousin Kenny, fifteen years old, awkward, pimply, really into stereo equipment and computers. His mother had recently been sent to prison for drug and parole violations, and so everybody was trying to give Kenny something constructive to do, you know, show him another path to take besides his mother’s.

I’m thinking of changing my name.  There’s been a lot of talk in recent years about women playwrights.  Somebody did a study a while back and discovered that even though women make up half the graduates of playwriting programs across the country, only something like 10 percent of new play productions are going to women playwrights.  Or something like that – I can’t remember the exact numbers, probably because I’m a girl and girls are stupid.

Behold!  The first episode of my eagerly-anticipated-in-my-mind new podcast.  

THIS EPISODE IS ABOUT:  Coming up with the name for my podcast.  Hence the title.
